Televisionary

It's a big night for TV. You got premieres left and right and there are a lot of good shows facing off. 'CSI' and 'Grey's Anatomy' both should have interesting plot twists tonight, given the rumors that major characters will be written off. But how do you decide what to tune into? Well, if you already set the Tivo to record 'The Office,' rest assured you don't have to miss out on one of the other two. You can catch it online tomorrow while you're at work ... oh, um, on your lunch break of course! You can see last night's ABC shows or CBS shows the day after they air for free.

So here are my questions of the day: is this the wave of the television future –T.V.ideo? Shows on demand, on your computer, whenever you want them? Do you see this as a potential medium for other media? For example, could the DVD box sets of TV shows start getting released on your computer instead of going out to purchase them? Will we get to the point where new-release movies are available for (legitimate) download at the same time they hit the theaters?

Auntie Emmy, Auntie Emmy

So like millions of Americans, I tuned into the Emmys last night. But I actually set the DVR to tape it, turned it on around 10 and fast-forwarded through anything that seemed uninteresting... which was about ¾ the show. What were they doing? It was a disaster. From the round stage (it's nice for experimental theater, but who thought it was a good idea here?) to all the censoring (what was Ray Romano saying and why would FOX of all stations feel the need for strange audio and video cutaways?) to the 'Jersey Boys' (totally fast-forwarded that and thanked Fios for the power to do so) to the obviously rehearsed yet still painfully awkward interaction between Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert to Ryan Seacrest's medieval pimp outfit (actually, simply to Ryan Seacrest – could he have been more pandering with the 'Idol' attacks and the 'Desperate Housewives' smoozing?).

Here's what I liked: the 'Family Guy' character's opening song. Rainn Wilson vs. Kanye West singing Kanye West songs. Al Gore getting a standing ovation. Here's what I didn't like: everything else. I checked out a lot of the stuff I skipped over on the Emmy page today at work. Yeah, I didn't miss much. Instead, I had fun flipping through the best/worst dressed and hair galleries. I was able to check the list of winners for the awards I fast-forwarded through, got to see some party pictures, and then weighed in with my thoughts in reaction areas. Next year, I am going to skip watching altogether and just get caught-up online the next day. The coverage is so much better and I don't get blisters on my thumb from fast-forwarding.

No Whammy!

When I was a kid I wanted nothing more than to be on 'Let's Make a Deal.' I had only seen one or two of them but I thought it was so cool you could wear costumes and get on TV. At one point I had the opportunity to sit in the audience of a cheaper version of 'Let's Make a Deal' that aired on late night cable – local access or something. As the host wandered through the audience looking for participants, it dawned on me that if I was picked, I would actually get on TV! A whole five people might actually see me! So of course, I sat there, eyes down, silently saying "Not me, not me, not me..." and he passed on by. But the allure of the game show, especially being a big game show winner – of the Ken Jennings variety - is still strong, although now I'm not so much interested in the glorified costume contest version. Thought this article: How to Get on a Gameshow was fun reading. I would have loved to have gone on 'Beat the Geeks' when that existed or something like 'Identity.' So now that you know how to get on, what game show will mark your debut?

The stories don't stop coming about Kid Nation, CBS' latest gamble with reality TV. It's an intriguing concept, and not an original one (thank you William Golding), but it's not like CBS is a stranger to hyping controversy around their reality shows. I am a little skeptical. Usually, networks pay tons of money to hush up controversy like this, especially before the show even airs. Okay, so it worked for Fox. When it was leaked that one of the 'Idol' contestants had some inappropriate web photos, the ratings went sky-high. But the last time CBS tried this, it didn't go so well. Remember that battle of the races on 'Survivor?' and how it felt like CBS orchestrated a PR campaign every single time a sponsor pulled their advertising? People were burned by the concept and, when it aired, it was the lowest-viewed premiere of all the previous seasons. Will Kid Nation succumb to the same fate? Does this kind of PR make you more or less interested in the actual show?

The Last Dance

I had a little pool going with the It's Hot team and some other coworkers regarding the finale of 'So You Think You Could Dance.' It's Hot Jeff was feeling the love for Lacey, thinking the brother-sister-big-winner thing was a shoe-in. It's Hot Marc thought Neil had it in the bag based on 10 – 13 female demographic. I agreed, Neil probably did get a majority of support from that crowd, but my theory was most of them had already been ordered up to bed by the time the phones were opened for voting. Another co-worker thought Danny's standing ovation Wed. night was a sure sign he had it. I had my money on Sabra – she was my favorite female contestant from day one – and I was so happy it paid off. I had been a little nervous though – on Wednesday, Sabra danced some unconventional routines that drew criticism from the judges. I personally loved this "Fox Mother and Daughter" piece Wade did:

I almost cried at the end, but apparently it went over the judge's heads. And I thought it was a little unfair of them to throw Sabra and Lacey under a bus just because they didn't "get" it. But there were plenty of dances I didn't like that the judges loved – like the routine Mia choreographed for Neil and Lacey that represented seeing her father in heaven. I found it overly-sentimental, not terribly entertaining and, honestly, not very well danced. But they definitely pulled a sympathy vote that week and the judges went wild over it. They even ranked it among their most memorable numbers. I was pleased to see a couple of the routines I considered my favorites ranked among their choices. I hadn't yet updated my most memorable routines post with stuff from the second half of this season but are a couple I had planned to add:

Sabra & Lacey: Jazz

Sabra & Neil: Jazz

And here's a link to the Hummingbird routine since I had the video embedded in the previous post:

Hok & Jaime: Jazz

Shew! Now that the season is over, I can go back to my usual stance of snubbing pop-culture reality TV shows. At least until 'Project Runway' starts back up.

As far as school mascots go, I've had some pretty bad ones. In high school I was a Blazer. Not a Trail Blazer or anything that actually made sense, just a Blazer. What, were we supposed to be suit jackets? I'm still not sure what we Blazed. In college I was a Seagull. That's pretty intimidating, huh? I often felt like our school cheer should be something like "We are brazen, we are brash, don't mess with us or we'll eat your trash!" But I will say I'd fear a Seagull before I'd fear a Violet (NYU mascot). The more observant viewers of 'Pulp Fiction' might have noticed Samuel L. Jackson sporting a Fighting Bananaslugs t-shirt at one point in the film. It wasn't made up for the movie – that's the real mascot of UC Santa Cruz. Red has the list of those and some that are even worse. On a related note, AOL Money has a feature about the most annoying corporate mascots which ties in nicely to the conversation below about most memorable TV ads. Strangely, most of the ones we commented on as being memorable are noted in the most annoying list. I guess obnoxious or not, the advertisement made an impact and the mascot did what it was supposed to – stuck with us. Personally I hate the BK King – he looks creepy. And I simply don't get the Wendy's wig. Any mascots (either school or advertising) worse than the ones on these lists?

Need the D'oh

Last week I posted about books to movies so it's only a natural follow up that I post about TV shows to movies. And it's only a natural follow up to that to post about 'The Simpsons' movie. More often than not, the TV show to movie formula doesn't work. Usually you have one of two problems: the movies either feel like a too-long version of a particularly bad TV episode or they go over the top and try to out-camp the TV show. 'Bewitched,' 'Dukes of Hazzard,' 'Miami Vice,' 'Starsky & Hutch,' 'Mod Squad,' 'Lost in Space,' 'Wild Wild West,' 'Charlies Angles,' and almost all of the 'Saturday Night Live' skits made terrible movies ('Wayne's World' and 'Office Space' being the notable 'SNL' exceptions). I did enjoy 'Serenity,' 'South Park' 'Brain Candy' and 'The Naked Gun.' And I enjoyed 'The Simpsons.' A lot. The movie really took the show to the next level - Marge swears, Otto smokes from a bong and Homer flashes the finger. 'The Simpsons' takes some wicked pot-shots at the Fox network, some fun pot-shots at the audience and one revealing pot-shot of Bart. The big baddie is voiced by Albert Brooks, who also voiced one of my favorite guest characters on the show – Hank Scorpio, Homer's evil genius boss in a 007 spoof. Brooks made the Best Simpson's Guest Stars list (#5) for that role (and others) and that episode made the Best Simpson's Episodes list (which astoundingly lacked "Homer the Great" – the Stonecutters episode. Don't think I didn't comment on the board about that!) What do you think about TV shows to movies? Are they mostly destined to fail? What about the other way around? 'Buffy' was a great show from a movie. I didn't watch them, but I heard 'The Highlander' and 'The Crow' weren't bad shows. And more importantly, what other 'Simpsons' guest stars and episodes were left off the list?

The Idiot Box

Ahh Television Gods...Sometimes you cancel the bad shows for good, and that's good, but sometimes you cancel the good shows for good and that's bad. Sometimes our prayers are answered – after all, CBS announced they'd bring back ' Jericho ' due to popular demand. Searching through Our Favorite Cancelled Shows I have to agree with a couple of their assessments: 'The Tick' was quirky and was Warburton's best role outside of Brock Samson. 'Firefly' was a great show with tremendous potential, but was devastatingly aired out of order, making it hard for the show to gain momentum. 'Buffy' had amazing characters and some incredibly imaginative storylines, though it had a pretty decent run and may have reached its natural end anyway. And I admit it; I enjoyed 'My So Called Life' -- it was a refreshing alternative to 90210. I didn't watch or care about any of the others on the "Favorites Cancelled Shows" list, but I am sorely missing 'Freaks and Geeks,' an amazingly great show from the guy who brought you '40-Year Old Virgin' and 'Knocked up.' Another one missing off the list is 'Action,' an underrated-because-it-was-before-it's-time comedy with Jay Mohr. What else do you miss and missing off the list?

That is Whack!

I've had a week or so now to ponder the series finale of the 'Sopranos.' I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I've heard loads of rumors since it aired: "Tony's dead" ... "Tony's not dead" ... "There's a movie being made. It will be a prequel about who killed Tony" ... "There's a movie being made. It will be a sequel about what Tony does next 'cause he's not dead." And then there's my personal theory: Steve Perry killed Tony (Steve Perry was Journey's lead singer, for you kids out there). Because I was sort of ambivalent about the ending, I decided to see what kind of 'Sopranos' coverage I could find. After killing (ha) time taking the Whacked Quiz (I got an 8 out of 10) and checking out the Gangster Numerology (hum, Tony Soprano is full of ambition, leadership and independence...who knew?), I decided to read what other people thought of the finale. Boy, you people were angry! And I can understand that you feel cheated. The way the ending just cut off and went to black is a little like

Dance Revolution

I have to confess my secret shame. Despite my scorn for mainstream television, I love 'So You Think You Can Dance.' However, I really only love one part. The breakers. Once the breakers are gone, I completely stop watching. Well, I usually stop watching. At least I say I'm going to stop watching. Okay, I totally still watch it. But regardless. This year one of my favorite breakers, Hok, made it to the finals. While he continues to wow me, I still can't get over one of the dancers I saw audition. His dance was so impressive that I was actually motivated to get up off the couch, find the clip on AOL Video and share it. Everyone should check this guy out - it's the most amazing slow break dance routine, made even more amazing by the fact he suffers from Scoliosis. And speaking of crazy auditions, did you see Jamal? He did a pretty good breaking routine, especially considering he's a large fellow, but the judges were suspicious he was a one-trick pony so they challenged him to come back and do a swing routine. The results were hilarious. Meanwhile, go Hok!
