It used to be that video resumes were reserved for people who wanted jobs as news anchors or were submitting applications to be on a reality TV show. But things are changing. With the new popularity of vlogging and the fact that video resumes are becoming easier to create and upload, it is beginning to feel like you need video application just to be considered for any regular job. Most job searching sites offer video resume posting and many offer helpful tips and advice on how to go about doing one. This scares me, as I am incredibly camera shy. I love writing and would rather write an entire 100 page dissertation about who I am then try to sum myself up in 100 words in front of a camera. If video resumes truly are the next generation of job applications, I certainly won't be motivated to move jobs anytime soon. According to this article "Is a Video Resume for You," the video resume isn't actually your resume, but rather a short promo clip or commercial even that might help recruiters seek out your full, traditional resume from the 30,000+ they have already received. Check out some of these examples. Some are creative and some are funny, which makes them stand out. If I were a recruiter, they might motivate me to seek out those applicants. The risk is they would immediately turn off a recruiter who was searching for someone more professional. And some of the applicants who are trying to be professional on video appear simply uptight and awkward, which again, defeats the purpose. It seems like a real double-edged sword. One of the recruiting managers here at AOL made me feel a little better by saying, in addition to having concerns about EEO issues, she finds it unlikely recruiters will take the time to review 10 – 15 videos per job. But if it really is the wave of future, maybe recruiters will have to adapt as well. Is this trend here to stay?
I know my pursuit of all-cool-things-off-the-beaten-track takes me down some dark paths once in awhile, but often the results are worth it. Even if you are not a fan of his, hearing the intentionally creepy and always shocking Marilyn Manson host
